The Boy Scout Law, Updated

Every Boy Scout knows the Scout Law like the back of his hand (and can recite it so fast it sounds like one word): A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. Although it wouldn’t flow trippingly off the tongue, I think after “clean” should come really, we mean it.  And thrown in somewhere should be: Awkward.  Really, really awkward. I don’t suggest this to poke fun, I’m truly being sympathetic.  Being 13-ish is tough and it shows.  I remember my own middle school experience and it was no fun, but on…

Once Upon a Delivery Room

It was a dark and stormy night.  I was being a real handful, angrily quizzing my husband about exactly where the on-call anesthesiologist lived, and how long it would take him to get to the hospital to give me my epidural ALREADY!  And how much, to the minute, he would be slowed down by the nasty February weather. My poor husband. It really was a dark and stormy night.  When we tell our boys the story of their arrival, we get to indulge in a little drama.  It was well into the evening, and a nasty sleet-snow was falling…

For the Love of Harry Potter

Oh my gosh, it’s so good. I mean, really good. So good, in fact, I want to lock myself in the bedroom and ignore everything but the book until I finish it.  But then, what kind of mother would I be?  Can I argue that a good mother gets on board with her kids’ obsessions as long as she reminds them where the peanut butter is? No, of course not, but I’m coming to realize why my kids are totally taken with all things Harry Potter.  And J.K. Rowling herself.  My daughter, who did a report on this most-famous…

The First 100 Days (of Homeschooling, That Is)

Sometimes it’s hard to believe we’ve gotten this far.  At other times, it’s not.  Recently we reached a milestone:  100 days of homeschooling.  We fastened our seatbelts back in August and ready or not, we took our newfound motivation for a spin.  Map in hand, we had a pretty good idea where we wanted to go but no idea where we’d end up.  Sometimes the ride was smooth, sometimes the dips and turns were expected (math) and sometimes they were not (grammar).  But here we are.  100 days and not yet out of gas. Last fall I wrote an…

Downhill Skiing Advice: Straight from an Amateur

Sigh.  Always a ski bunny and never a bum. Trust me, I don’t flatter myself with that statement.  Although the bunny hill is one I can “Lindsey Vonn” (sort of) I can’t do it carrying a steaming cup of joe.  I’ve really seen that happen.  Nor can I “shred it” while carrying a bin of paper files (yup, seen that, too).  Talk about taking the office with you. But there is something I do bring down a slope, and that thing is fear.  I don’t need speed.  Or bumps.  I certainly don’t need “air.”  But I do need the…

Embracing Imperfection at Christmas…a Photo Journal

I know people who decorate their Christmas trees with new, color-coordinated themes every year.  I know people who special-order pine boughs to adorn their mantles and banisters, and then have someone come in to deck the halls for them.  If that’s how they roll for Christmas, more power to them.  I’m sure their homes look beautiful. The tradition in our family?  It isn’t Christmas unless the vintage manger scene includes a glitter ball snowman and the Star Trek ornaments share boughs with Lenox crystal reindeer. That’s how we roll. I am a perfectionist desperately trying to adopt the mantra, “perfection is overrated.”  And…

Meningitis, Mistaken Gender, and Orange Pee…Our Week in Review

It was one of those weeks. One of those that by the time it’s over, you feel as if you’ve been in a time warp and wondering what the heck happened.  As crazy and weird as it was, the week was a learning experience, a wake up call and in some ways, pretty joyful: ~Early Monday morning, I took my husband to the emergency room;  his headache had returned with a vengeance, with a fever, chills and a stiff neck.  He was admitted to the hospital for meningitis and then given every available IV drug the pharmacy had to offer….

Only Children as Parents

When I typed “only children as parents” into Google, I found very little that discussed only children and their children.  Here’s what I found instead (among other things): “9 Reasons Why Dating An Only Child is Difficult.”  (Ha, only 9?  My husband would love to add to that list!) “What Being an Only Child Says About You.”  (with a title like that it can’t be good…) Various sites regarding support groups for the parents of only children. and finally (I almost peed a little when I saw it.): “Only Child Adult Blog:  Are You an Only-Child and a Parent?” which…

“Infertility Unplugged:” the Outtakes

Last week, in Happy Birthday, Boys: “Infertility Unplugged” by the Numbers I wrote about my husband’s and my infertility experience from a mathematical point-of-view.  This week,  I turn to the lighter side.  It’s hard to believe, even years later, that some aspects of infertility could actually make anyone laugh.  And I wish I could have at the time; laughter is great therapy.   But better late than never, right?  So here are some of the absurd instances in our infertility journey: ~“The Folly of the Pharmacy.”  Pharmacology was the toughest class I took in school.  Anyone who can get a PhD…
